          MACS is leading a grass-roots effort to change educational policy in Maine.  Charter school legislation has now passed in a bipartisan effort by Maine lawmakers, and now there is new work to be done. 

          MACS is busy applying for grants both to fund our new, different, and increasing workload, and to fund training for the new State Charter School Commission and any local school districts interested in authorizing a charter school.

          The Department of Education is working hard on the rules and processes needed to implement the new charter school law.  They must report their recommendations to the Legislature's Education Committee by November 1, and new legislation adopting their work must be voted on in the Committee, Senate, and House during January.

          We expect continued opposition from established Maine groups such as the Maine Teacher's Association, Maine Principal's Association, Maine's School Board Association, and the Maine Superintendent's Association.
