Charter Schools in

“Our schools can do better" Last year, I visited High Tech High Charter School in San Diego; it's an amazing school where educators have augmented traditional teaching methods with a rigorous, project-centered curriculum.”
Bill Gates, The Washington Post, 2/25/07

“One of the great developments in education over the past few decades has been the advent of widespread choice within the public school system. It’s hard to argue against providing families with options to choose from in meeting the particular educational needs of their children.” www.publiccharters.org, 3/2/07

Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick supports charter schools.
“The governor is right about the importance of charter schools. A recent Department of Education study of several years of MCAS data showed that charter students did as well or better than their district counterparts 90 percent of the time, with 30 percent outscoring districts by significant margins.”
Paul Sagan and Bill Teuber, The Boston Globe, February 20, 2007

“Charter schools are one of the great success stories of education reform in Massachusetts....
On last spring's MCAS, almost 75 % of [the 59] Commonwealth charter schools outperformed their host districts in English and math... Almost one-fifth... surpassed their local district average by over 20 points. Some of the highest performing charter schools are located in some of the lowest achieving school districts. This kind of performance reveals the powerful promise of charter schools to raise expectations for what public education can become -- especially for students from historically underserved communities.
James A. Peyser, The Boston Globe, February 20, 2007

Charter Schools are the Future
“Philadelphia needs more charters as Vallas increasingly standardizes the curricula. A standard curriculum strengthens top administrators and helps the large numbers of Philadelphia students who transfer during the school year. Though standardization works for "average" students, it bores the gifted and leaves at-risk students behind. These students need more options, which explains why Philadelphia charter schools have 20,000 students on their waiting lists.” Robert Maranto, Philadelphis Inquirer, 3/5/07
