Maine's Need |

The Advisory Committee supports the development of Charter Schools in Maine. As a committee whose primary focus is on disengaged students who are underserved by the current system we see the availability of public Charter school options as helpful in providing additional learning and teacher options for disaffected students, families, and teachers. A concern is that Charters not be set up as sites for chronically acting-out students or other populations to be excluded from the mainstream but as sites for research-based alternatives in education. With Charter schools Maine students can have more options for assistance in finishing high school and contributing to higher percentages of students seeking post secondary experiences. As Charters tend to be small schools, these are perfect settings for relational education to blossom creating positive environments for disengaged students. Perhaps we will find the Charter Schools will help public schools by serving as lab schools to help design curricular and relational approaches that will also be helpful in mainstream schools.
