Charter Schools in Action: Renewing
Public Education
Chester Finn, Bruno Manno, Gregg Vanourek; Princeton Univ. Press; 2000. Results of many state and national research studies on the
development and performance of charter schools are now available.
Common findings include:
- Charter laws vary from state to state; all emphasize choice
and accountability for results.
- Charter schools are seedbeds of institutional innovation and
display great organizational and educational diversity.
- Charter schools generally satisfy their primary constituents:
families, students, and teachers.
- Charter schools are good at leveraging parent involvement.
- Charter schools face determined foes and numerous obstacles,
but many of these can be overcome.
- Most of the allegations against charter schools are false or
exaggerated.
- Charter schools are having ripple effects on school districts,
communities, and American education as a whole. They have the
potential to rekindle and redefine public education.
- Charter schools are advancing our knowledge of education
accountability.
