31 Years of Experience!

The Community School has been serving over 600 high risk students since 1973.  “Everyday we hear from one or two of them – they are now parents of kids in school who are doing well, lawyers, social workers, corporate managers, etc.

The Community School offers residential and home-based tutoring, small seminars, vocational training, guided life-experience, experiential, and post graduate courses and resources.

Each student creates an individual graduation plan which includes standard requirements as well as special courses to meet specific needs and interests.

They have broken through cycles of despair, rage and abuse
 to create meaningful lives”

Three programs are offered:

·        a six month residential program twice a year for eight students between the ages of 16 and 20;

·        a home-centered program based on the Walkabout model for 15 - 20 year old parents;

·        a post-graduate program for alumni and their families.

Students with non-traditional learning styles, problematic family and social backgrounds, or a history of disengagement in conventional schools who are motivated to complete high school are welcome applicants.

They have been demoralized, angry, resistant,  - yet hopeful and willing to give this new form of schooling a chance.

  • 80% of these students have completed high school;
  • 40% have gone on to post-secondary programs;
  • 75% who had previously been incarcerated have not recidivated;
  • 70% have been in contact after leaving the program;
  • a majority have created families that have been more successful than their families of origin.
