The Cobscook Community Learning Center - Lubec

Considering a Proposal for a Public Charter School

A citizen's group of activists, educators, and parents ("Cobbies") from the Cobscook Bay region of Eastern Washington County, Maine came together in 1999 to develop a learning center that would enhance the quality of life of area residents. The CCLC has plied elements of Folk, Indigenous and Popular Education in shaping a mission, vision and set of guiding values. Serving both the local and global community, the CCLC incorporates the arts, the rich local social fabric, dialogue, and experiences with the land into all its programs.

The Cobscook Community Learning Center is in a unique position to serve as a model of technological innovation for non-profit community based organizations far beyond its geographical borders, and integrate this technology with communities, schools and other grass roots organizations.

The CCLC has offered several experiences for area youth in public schools where they received credit for participating. The Cobscook Gathering, the Landscape Architecture Course, Intensive Summer School Courses, and a canoe expedition.

“I believe that the Cobscook Community Learning Center has the potential of becoming a model program of great significance. ~people who want to create vibrant, collaborative learning communities ~will be looking to CCLC for inspiration and guidance for years to come.“

Mary Field Belenky, Ed.D. Associate Research Professor

“The commitment the CCLC has made to provide learners of all ages access to the arts and experiential education will fill a void in that part of the world.“

Gary A. DeLong Executive Director Maine Sea Coast Missionary Society

“I applaud the CCLC for its broad vision and for reaching beyond the borders of our State to bring new and innovative opportunities to the young people of Downeast Maine.“

John Baldacci, Governor of Maine

“I have watched with admiration the efforts of the CCLC’s Core Group to bring a new educational model to our area, one which will go far to bridge the divides which separate people of different ethnicities, backgrounds, ages, genders, and economic status in our region.“
